Discovered 200 years ago by a German physician, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, Homeopathy is a completely natural system of medicine that uses its own method of diagnosing as well as its own special remedies. Not considered alternative medicine, Homeopathy has instead become an integral part of European mainstream medicine and is extremely popular throughout the world. For generations, Homeopathy has been the medical treatment preferred by Great Britain’s royal family, and the London Homeopathic Hospital and School of Medicine is under the patronage of the Queen. Homeopathy, considered a legally recognized method of healing, is experiencing considerable growth in the U.S., probably due to the growing dissatisfaction with the toxic side effects of drugs prescribed by mainstream medicine.
Based on the principle called the “law of similars,” Homeopathy’s very name is derived from Greek words: “homolos” meaning similar and “pathos” meaning disease or suffering. The remedies are individually selected for their ability to cause in large doses symptoms like those a person is experiencing. Since one’s symptoms are efforts made by the body to re-establish homeostasis or balance, Homeopathy seeks a substance that supports rather than suppresses the body’s own efforts to heal itself, going with, rather than against, a person’s natural defenses. In conventional medical therapies, although Homeopathy’s law of similars has even been applied in immunizations and allergy treatments, which are not Homeopathy, as homeopathic remedies are more individually prescribed and given in smaller, safer doses, used both to treat and prevent acute and chronic diseases. Homeopathy’s remedies, unlike drugs, have no harmful side effects and are not addictive. Prepared according to the American Homeopathic Pharmacopocia and regulated by the FDA, the remedies are safe for adults, the elderly, babies, children and even pregnant women.
Homeopathy’s all-natural remedies are made from plant (such as dandelion), mineral (such as metals, magnesium salts or Mother of Pearl) or animal origin (such as the venom of the bee), which when taken in small doses stimulates a person’s natural defenses or innate healing potential. The curative effects of these different substances is enhanced by a special treatment, discovered and developed by Dr. Hahnemann, called “POTENTIING.” This consists of diluting the original substance in steps to reduce the toxicity and by shaking the dilution after each diluting step in order to enhance its action as a remedy. Through this process, the diluted remedies not only become safe to use, but actually acquire increased potency for more effective healing.
Like all medicine, Homeopathy is truly an art, and it’s best to seek the advice of a Homeopathic Practitioner. The first visit is a lengthy one, because it is essential to discover the unique symptoms and characteristics of the individual, how the illness affects the person, how it feels and how the person is able to function. Also discussed is a history of past medical treatments, both conventional and natural, and everything happening in the patient’s life that might be associated with the illness. The success of the treatment depends on the completeness and thorough nature of the consultation. Conventional medicine believes that the symptoms are the cause of the illness, whereas Homeopathy sees the symptoms as the result of the illness and seeks to find the cause.
For this reason, a lengthy first consultation is required. It is important to dicover the unique symptoms and characteristics of each individual, how the illness affects the person, how it feels to them, and how they function. Past medical treatments, conventional and natural, is discussed as well.
Patients are encouraged to talk about anything in their lives, which they feel is related to the illness. For success in Homeopathy, it is essential that the consultation be complete and thorough.
The success of any course of treatment depends on the strength and attitude of the patients, the skill of the Homeopathic practitioner, the severity and duration of the illness and the extent of prior suppressive treatment.
We will be more than happy to discuss this with you in person or over the phone in order to help you decide whether Homeopathy is right for you.
Like With Like
The Homeopathic principle of treating like with like is based on treating an illness with a substance that produces a healthy person the same symptoms to those experienced by the sick person. For example: Ipecacuanha (produced from the root of the plant) if taken by a healthy person will cause vomiting, but if taken in the form of a Homeopathic remedy will stop vomiting.
Allium Sepia (produced from onion) will help treat allergies that cause tears and nose irritations, much like the effect slicing an onion will have on a healthy person.
