CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY

What is CranioSacral Therapy

Osteopathic researcher and founder of CranioSacral Therapy, John E. Upldger, D.O., O.M.M and over 80,000 trained practitioners around the world have been using the rhythm of another body system – the CranioSacral system – to enhance neurological functioning and alleviate pain.
The vital system influences the development and performance of the brain and spinal cord.
An imbalance or restriction in it could potentially cause many different sensory motor , or neurological disabilities. These problems could include chronic pain, learning disabilities, delayed developmental disorders, motor-coordination impairments and other health and well being challenges.
CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle and safe method of detection and correction that encourages our own natural healing mechanisms to dissipate these negative effects of stress on your central nervous systems.

What Conditions Does CranioSacral Therapy Address

CranioSacral Therapy strengthens your body’s ability to maintain a healthy state. It helps alleviate a range of illnesses, pain and dysfunctions, including :

  • ADD
  • ADHD
  • PDD
  • TMJ
  • Bells’ Palsy
  • Autism
  • Anxiety
  • Colic
  • Clogged Tear Ducts
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Chronic Pain Including Migrations
  • Depression
  • Down Syndrome
  • Delayed Developmental Disorder
  • Eating Disorders
  • Extreme Hyperactivity
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Repetitive Behavior, I.E, Hands in the mouth
  • Sleep Disorders
  • Undiagnosed Neurological Disorders

How Is CranioSacral Therapy Performed ?

CranioSacral Therapy is performed while the patient is fully clothed ( lying down or seated ). Using a light touch the practitioner monitors the rhythm of the craniosacral system to detect restrictions and imbalances throughout the body.
The therapist then uses delicate manual techniques to release those restrictions and relieve undue intracranial pressure on the brain and spinal cord.
The session cal last from 20 minutes to more than a hour.
I can be used alone or in conjunction with other therapies.

What are the results ?

You will have central nervous system free to perform at its optimum levels.

Cranio Sacral Therapy for Newborns

Chair of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Delaware states that “navigating the birth canal is probably the most gymnastic maneuver that most of us will ever make in life”. In humans the birth canal is a flattened oval one way shifting its orientation 90 degrees so that it is flattened the other way. This changing shape makes human birth difficult. The evolution of the wide clavicles presents the need for the shoulder to rotate two times to follow the evolved larger head through the birth canal – sometimes getting stuck, causing injury to part of the spinal nerves and leaving rotational patterns in the hips, spine, and neck. As adults we seek a massage or adjustment after a very strenuous endeavor or to relieve discomfort. Newborns and infants do not have the luxury to express their physical discomfort except in the “fussy baby”, the infant having difficulties digesting its milk, and the infant who awakes when laid down to sleep and awaking numerous times during the night unrelated to hunger or diaper change.

As a Cranio Sacral therapist working with children of all ages and releasing restrictive patterns in their bodies which help to alleviate problems/ issues they are having with fine and gross motor skills, sensory issues, ADD and ADHD I see a major positive difference in the children who add CST to their therapies. Our goals for working with infants are to alleviate the potential problems that may show up in the future, to boost the immune system, release nerve impingements causing and contributing to digestive problems, developmental delays, and undiagnosed neurological issues. It is so much easier to alleviate these potentials in infants than later in life where physical, speech, and occupational therapy becomes part of their every day life.

With great success I also use the cranial rhythm to evaluate allergies and adverse reaction to foods, medications, detergents, environmental items – bedding, etc. in addressing some of the symptoms infants and children are having.
